The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has said it stands by its test results showing that samples of Johnson & Johnson’s talcum powder contained traces of asbestos.
The agency’s position, shared with Chemical Watch this week, follows a December statement from the personal care giant J&J refuting an FDA test that [ found Johnson & Johnson’s talcum powder contained traces of asbestos ] (up to 0.00002%) in samples from a single bottle of Johnson’s Baby Powder.
According to the company’s statement, tests conducted by two third-party labs it commissioned showed asbestos was not present in the single bottle tested by the FDA’s contracted lab, AMA Analytical Services, Inc. (AMA), nor was it present in retained samples of the finished batch from which the bottle was produced.
The company said at the time it concluded the “most probable root causes for the FDA’s reported results were either test sample contamination and/or analyst error at the AMA lab”.
However, the FDA told Chemical Watch that it believes the results of its original tests are of concern and warranted the actions the agency took to protect consumers.
“We are aware of the company’s assertions and the FDA stands by its findings,” it said.
