  • What Product(s): Clubman brand talc products used by hairdressers and barbers
  • Who the defendants were: American International Industries
  • How much was awarded: Jury trial ongoing.  Note: Colgate was a defendant in these two lawsuits, but that company reeached a settlement with the plaintiffs before their trial began.

Trial involving four plaintiffs who alleged Johnson & Johnson’s talcum powder products caused their mesothelioma.

  • When: 2019
  • Where: Middlesex County, NJ
  • What Product(s): Johnson’s Baby Powder
  • Who the defendants were: Johnson & Johnson
  • How much was awarded: Jury awarded $37.3 million total in compensatory damages to four plaintiffs.  Jury later awarded $750 million total in punitive damages, but the Judge immediately said this award would be reduced to $186.5 million pursuant to the New Jersey Punitive Damages Act.

Plaintiff claimed that he used Johnson & Johnson talcum powder product from birth until age 50, which caused his mesothelioma at age 52.

  • Who the defendants were: Johnson & Johnson
  • How much was awarded: Defense verdict

Plaintiff claimed that years of inhaling asbestos in cosmetic talcum powder products used on herself and to diaper her children caused mesothelioma.

  • Where: Middlesex County, NJ
  • What Product(s): Johnson’s Baby Powder and Shower to Shower; Cashmere Bouquet
  • Who the defendants were: Johnson & Johnson; Imerys Talc America; Colgate-Palmolive Co.
  • How much was awarded: Colgate-Palmolive settled just before opening statements; Defense verdict for Johnson & Johnson

Plaintiff developed mesothelioma after using a talcum powder contaminated with asbestos.

  • When: 2018 (trial), 2016 (filed)
  • Where: Middlesex County, NJ
  • What Product(s): Johnson’s Baby Powder
  • Who the defendants were: Johnson & Johnson, Imerys Talc, Cyprus Mineral Co., Cyprus Amax Minerals Company, Whittaker, Clark & Daniels
  • How much was awarded: $117 million ($37 million compensatory damages and $80 million punitive damages). NOTE: This jury award was eliminated in April 2021 by a New Jersey appellate court ruling.

Plaintiff developed mesothelioma after using a talcum powder contaminated with asbestos.

  • Who the defendants were: Colgate-Palmolive Co, Shulton Inc, Whittaker, Clark & Daniels
  • How much was awarded: N/A

Plaintiff contracted peritoneal mesothelioma due to second-hand exposure from clothing his father wore while working at a cosmetics company warehouse.

  • When: 2013
  • Where: Middlesex County, NJ
  • What Product(s): Desert Flower and Old Spice
  • Who the defendants were: Whittaker, Clark & Daniels
  • How much was awarded: $1.6 million
